LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Eagles Pop Warner Association won all three of its matches against the Lihu‘e Patriots Saturday at Vidinha Stadium during the second week of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League season.
Earlier in the day, the Hanapepe Colts swept its series, taking the Kekaha Titans 30-14 in the Unlimited division and handing the Koloa Redskins its loss, 19-0.
The Redskins opened the day’s action at 7:30 a.m. with a 19-0 win over the Kekaha Titans in the Mitey Mite division.
Kahanu Davis, the Koloa quarterback, marked keeper plays of 9, 29 and 37 yards for the Redskin scores, which came in the second, third and fourth periods.
Following two unsuccessful point-after attempts, the Redskins marked a successful PAT following its fourth period touchdown, which came with 2:35 remaining in the game.
Davis connected with Nakoa Andrade for the 19-0 final math.
Unlimited: Hanapepe 30, Kekaha 14
Hanapepe Colts’ ball carrier Reymund Mendoza had runs of 40 and 59 yards for two touchdowns, one in the opening series and the other in the fourth period to lead the Hanapepe win.
Justin Fune, gracing Mendoza’s first touchdown with a point-after boot, pushed the Colts to an 8-0 lead with 7:04 showing the first period.
Kekaha answered with just three seconds remaining in the period when Cody Taniguchi broke out for a 36-yard score, the PAT failing to give the Colts an 8-6 bulge after one quarter.
Logan Kanahele-Shintani, one of several Hanapepe quarterbacks, kept the ball for a 41-yard keeper score with 4:39 showing in the half. The point-after failed to give the Colts a 14-6 lead at the half.
Hanapepe got on the boards in the third period when Kai Boy Perreira Alquiza, another QB, connected with Ardino Ned for a 32-yard aerial score at the 3:34 mark.
Fune kicked his second PAT boot for the 22-6 lead.
Mendoza opened the fourth quarter with his 59-yard score at the 9:35 mark, Fune gracing the TD with the point-after boot for the 30-6 lead.
As the clock wound down, Kekaha struck for the second time, Jaycob Rapanot striking paydirt on a 9-yard run and Jordan Baptista doing the point-after boot for the 30-14 final.
JPW: Hanapepe 19, Koloa 0
Ryno Banasihan marked two touchdowns and a point-after run to lead the Colts to its 19-0 shutout over the Redskins in the morning finale.
Banasihan struck with 9:04 showing in the second quarter on a 44-yard charge to paydirt and graced the score by running in the PAT for the 7-0 bulge.
With just three ticks before the half, Colt quarterback Lacin Montemayor, whose other hat is a Junior Dragster at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park, connected with Degan Davis on a 5-yard scoring pass. The point-after failed for the 13-0 halftime lead.
Banasihan marked the final Colt touchdown with 4:53 showing in the third period, charging two yards into the end zone. The PAT failed for the 19-0 final.
JPW: Kapa‘a 14, Lihu‘e 6
Kapa‘a Eagle Levi Cummings marked two touchdowns to lead Kapa‘a to its 14-6 edge over the Patriots JPW in the first of three afternoon matchups.
With the Eagles hosting, JPW quarterback Lanakila Pagtolingan connected with Cummings on a 24-yard hit at the 1:19 mark of the first period for the 6-0 bulge after the PAT kick failed.
As the clock wound to the half under a grueling afternoon sun, Cummings struck with 2:56 showing in the period, breaking through on a five-yard charge to paydirt.
Ezekiel Gates Anakalea booted the PAT for the 14-0 halftime lead.
Lihu‘e JPW quarterback Tyler Oshima answered the call with 2:38 showing in the third period, hitting paydirt following a 29-yard run. The point-after failed for the 14-6 final.
JM: Kapa‘a 20, Lihu‘e 0
Kapa‘a Eagles’ Leighton Moniz scored two touchdowns and the Eagles’ defense struck for another score as the Eagles JM blanked the Patriots.
Moniz opened the scorebooks with 2:12 showing in the first period, hitting the end zone on a five-yard run. The point-after failed for the 6-0 margin which stood at the half following a scoreless second period.
Moniz made his second score with 6:06 showing in the third period, breaking out for a 30-yard touchdown. Jayson Hawthorne did the point-after boot for the 14-0 reading.
The Eagles’ defense opened the final period when Jayden Palenapa-Likelio plucked a Patriot airball and ran it back 22 yards for the final touchdown of the day.
MM: Kapa‘a 19, Lihu‘e 6
Chasen Tumaomao scored touchdowns of 46 yards and 12 yards to lead the Eagles to its 19-6 win in the nightcap.
Tumaomao struck early, scoring a 46-yard score with 3:17 showing in the first period and following that score with a 12-yarder with 4:44 remaining in the half. The PAT on both touchdowns failed for the 12-0 halftime lead.
Following a scoreless third period, the Eagles struck with 6:01 remaining in the game when Dreyden Iwamoto hit paydirt on a 13-yard run, gracing the score by running in the point-after for a 19-0 lead.
But Lihu‘e prevented the shutout when, with just 11 seconds remaining in the game, Tryten Pongasi broke out for a 65-yard run to the end zone for the 19-6 final.
This weekend’s games move to Sunday with five games on tap at Vidinha Stadium starting at 8 a.m. when the Kekaha Titans tangle with the Kapa‘a Eagles in a Mitey Mite division game followed by the Titans and Eagles meeting in a JPW division match at 10 a.m.
At noon, Lihu‘e Patriots, hosting the day’s games, will open against the Hanapepe Colts in a Mitey Mite division contest followed by the Patriots taking on the Koloa Redskins in a JPW match at 2 p.m. followed by a Patriots and Redskins Junior Midget division game starting at 4 p.m.
