The week-long Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival celebrates Hawaiian culture with lectures, music and hula competitions around the island. This year’s theme is Year of Na Kamali‘i, and it is to celebrate today’s young Hawaiian generation that represent the future of a culture.
“The Kaua’i Mokihana Festival attracts halau from across the state who compete for over $16,000 in prizes and trophies,” said Carol Bain, vice president of the Malie Foundation. “Both residents and visitors come from near and far to enjoy live music, hula and the sharing of Hawaiian culture.”
Hawaiian Church Services will be held 10 a.m. Sunday at the historic Kapa‘a First Hawaiian Church, located at 4-1320 Kuhio Hwy.
The service includes music and hula in both English and Hawaiian to honor Queen Deborah Kapule, who founded the church in 1879.
The Kaua‘i Composers Contest and Concert will be held 7 p.m. Monday at Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 at the door.
This competitive event produces new music in several categories of Hawaiian language and contemporary.
“Eo, E Lili‘u” Children’s/Youth Music Competition will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday at KCC Performing Arts Center, located at 3-1901 Kaumuali’i Hwy. in Lihu’e.
The event features students of the Hawaiian Immersion School Programs that compete musically by grades with songs.
The “Under the Palms Concert” will begin at 6 p.m. with hula, music, arts and crafts event at Aloha Beach Resort, located at 3-5920 Kuhio Hwy. in Kapa‘a, and will continue until 9 p.m.
Storyteller Kealoha the Magnificent Poet and will perform 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center (Safeway Center), under the Clock Tower in the Na Keiki O Ka’aina and The Children of the Land room, located at 4-831 Kuhio Hwy. in Kapa‘a.
Kaua‘i Beach Resort will host three days of hula competitions.
Hula Competitions include the solo/group kahiko nei on Thursday; group ‘auana on Friday; concluding with solo and finale on Saturday. A craft fair will feature locally-made items in the lobby.
