KAPA‘A — Taryn Mann, a 12th grade student at Kapa‘a High School, is on her way to earning her Quartermaster Award.
The Quartermaster Award is the Sea Scout equivalent to the Eagle Scout rank of the Boy Scouts of America, said Larry Richardson, commodore of the Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America Sea Scouting Program.
During the Labor Day weekend, the Sea Scout Ship Decisive was under the command of Mann as a requirement for her Quartermaster Award.
“Taryn commanded the ship for a three-day cruise from Nawiliwili to Hanalei where we anchored for the weekend before returning to Nawiliwili on Labor Day,” Richardson said in an email.
The trip covered a total of 65.4 nautical miles and Mann’s responsibilities during the cruise included delegating and supervising all duties, inspecting the vessel for required equipment, supervising all menu preparation, preparing the ship to get underway, set and weigh anchor, dock and maintain course by commands to the helmsman.
Additionally, while underway, Mann had to perform drills including man overboard, damage control, abandon ship, fire and other ship-related exercises.
“I was on hand to oversee the operation from a safety perspective,” Richardson said. “But Taryn was in command of the ship and I’m happy to report she did an outstanding job and passed with flying colors.”
Mann has been in the Sea Scouting program for three years.
She is currently the ship’s Boatswain (Chief Petty Officer) and holds the rank of Able Sea Scout. Actively working toward her Quartermaster Award, Mann hopes to be accepted to the United States Coast Guard Academy following her graduation from Kapa‘a High.
