HANAPEPE — The Kaua‘i Bulldogs’ Jaykob Naka‘ahiki-Young peeled off more than 100 yards on two slant touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 27-14 win over the Kapa‘a Warriors Saturday night at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Bulldogs controlled the offense in the first half, building a 21-0 lead over Kapa‘a at the intermission.
Naka‘ahiki-Young lost little time finding the end zone, opening the game with a 46 yard slant to the right to tap paydirt.
Bulldog quarterback Aaron Renaud did the point-after boot for the early 7-0 lead.
Late in the quarter, the Bulldogs’ Isaia Valoria snared a loose pigskin to set the stage for its second touchdown, a six-yard scoot by Kamuela Numuzawa, which came in the second period and Renaud’s PAT boot upping the ante to 14-0.
After holding Kapa‘a on downs, the Bulldogs struck again when Renaud took the ball on a 57-yard ride to paydirt, gracing the TD with his third successful PAT boot for the 21-0 read at the half.
A nice Renaud-to-Naka‘ahiki-Young pitch out at the last second yielded another score, a 74-yard romp.
Mana Kupihea blocked Renaud’s PAT for the 27-0 margin in the third period.
But the Warriors were not out, with quarterback Boogie Yam salvaging several key fourth-and-long situations throughout the first half.
Yam’s efforts bore fruit when the quarterback, on a fourth-and-10 situation in the final period, recovered his own fumble and ran it 41 yards for Kapa‘a’s first touchdown.
The point-after, a running play, fell short of the line for the 27-6 reading.
Kapa‘a’s final touchdown came in the final quarter when Daniel Asotasi demonstrated some fancy footwork, weaving between Bulldog defenders for an 18-yard score, Yam taking the point-after in for the 27-14 final.
Brad Hiranaka, the Kaua‘i Youth Football commissioner, said the Saturday game was a preview of the fall season, which opens Saturday at Vidinha Stadium when the Intermediate Division teams provide an encore meeting starting at 7 p.m. in a single game.
On Sept. 15, KYF teams will host Halawa in games on Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs play Halawa at 8 and 10 a.m. at Hanapepe Stadium followed by Kapa‘a playing Halawa at 10 a.m. and noon Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium.
“We’re still developing the elementary kids,” Hiranaka said. “Saturday, the Kaua‘i Bulldogs and Kapa‘a Warriors face each other again. This is ahead of a lot of football including games against Halawa, Ko‘olau, Kapolei and Waiana‘e.”
Hiranaka said the boys will also be selling Portuguese sausage tickets to help pay for the season finale over the Thanksgiving weekend on O‘ahu.
“The boys will have a full weekend of football starting with the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association football championships,” Hiranaka said.
“Saturday, they play one game and that night will watch the University of Hawai‘i play the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Sunday, they wrap up the weekend with one game followed by a potluck before coming home. That’s a lot of football.”
