KAPA‘A — Women in Theater, or WIT as it is known Islandwide, announces auditions for its Dinner Theater production at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel Sept. 8 and 9 at 1 p.m. The show “The Odd Couple” is on and at it again with a new, zesty twist.
The odds are you won’t guess what makes one of Neil Simon’s funniest comedies — correction, one the most acclaimed comedies worldwide — so extravagant. This couple is made of two women.
Of course a vital interest lingers in the sexual switch but according to Romey Curtis, WIT’s vice president, there is much more to it, as the dialogues have been reworked to highlight gender differences in a contemporary era that has finally realized the essential relevance of women in everyday affairs.
The female version to come out is currently awaiting qualified individuals to audition for the parts that will be directed by Cass Foster, professor emeritus of theater.
Eight men and women are needed. All actors must attend Saturday auditions and plan on attending Sunday’s callbacks. Actors must be at least 21. Email Cass Foster at Cass613@gmail.com to confirm you’ll be there, or if you’re unable to attend and would like to be auditioned.
Foster has directed for various universities and theaters throughout the Mainland. In Hawai‘i, he directed “The Complete History of America: Abridged,” Kaua‘i’s longest running comedy.
Foster is also looking for individuals to serve as stage manager, assistant stage manager, assistant to the director and understudy.
Curtis said she is looking forward to bringing out this original venue to the public who will experience the oddest adaptation of the 1965 Broadway hit turned into an instant classic film featuring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in 1968.
“There is no better comedy writer than Neil Simon,” Curtis said.
While some of WIT’s previous successes bordered on the absurd, “The Odd Couple” (female version) promises to etch a new edge on eccentricity’s dome.
Performances will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the last weekend of November and the first two weekends of December.
