LIHU‘E — Jessie Felipe of Hanama‘ulu, Shelby Erdmann of Waimea, Josie Aurelio of Lihu‘e and Marleen Duarte of Kalaheo will soon have the sun helping to power their homes.
The four people are the winners of four Home Solar photovoltaic Electric Systems given away by Islandwide Solar, said Jeremy Menschel, the senior solar engineering consultant for Islandwide Solar.
“The winners have been contacted and are extremely excited to have their systems installed,” Menschel said in an email. “The installation dates will be within the next few months.” Aurelio said they have wanted a solar system for so long and having won a system helps them realize their dream.
During the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair, which wrapped up Sunday evening, people could stop by any of the two booths touting information on photovoltaic services offered by Islandwide Solar. “There were a lot of people,” Menschel said. “By Sunday afternoon, we had more than 800 entrants sign up for the giveaway.”
Menschel said each of the systems will include 10 high efficiency 240-watt panels and high efficiency micro-inverters, all flashing kits and racking as well as electrical hookup.
“The installation, engineering, permit applications and Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative documentation are also included for each winner,” Menschel said. “This was a prize 100 percent turnkey, no catch, no trick.”
He said the value of each home system has a manufacturer suggested retail price of more than $15,000 and will offset about $110 a month from the homeowners’ electricity bills.
“We felt it was time to give back to the community in another way,” Menschel said, noting Islandwide Solar has earned prestigious awards from several local publications. “The proof is in the permits. Islandwide Solar pulls more than 65 percent of all solar permits as verified by the county’s permitting department. These are very good reasons why the community has selected us as the first choice for high quality solar.”
The drawings were done late Sunday afternoon with the winners being announced after Islandwide Solar had an opportunity to contact each of them. Winners did not have to be present for the drawing to win.
“We were planning on installing solar and have been saving for years,” Erdmann said in an Islandwide release. “Now, we get to have it installed for free.”
Duarte said she couldn’t wait to tell her husband because all of her friends were texting and Facebook-ing her after her name was drawn.
“I can’t believe I won,” the excited Kalaheo woman said. “I never win anything.”
