The Fourth Annual Kaua‘i Marathon will take place in Po‘ipu, Sunday and motorists are advised of the special traffic conditions, which will be in effect for the event.
The race starts at 6 a.m. and while traffic will flow in and around the Koloa, Po‘ipu, Lawa‘i and Kalaheo areas, there will be some lane and road closures between 5 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
To ensure the safety of both marathon participants and motorists, drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and patience when driving in the South Shore area.
All times are approximate and the Kaua‘i Police Department and Garden Island Security will be monitoring traffic flow throughout the marathon course.
Traffic will flow in and out of all South Shore regions, but travel in these areas on Sunday, race day, will be limited from 5 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
For residents and visitors needing to reach Lihu‘e from the South Shore or Westside, race officials suggest planning at least 1.5 to 2 hours travel time.
Road closures
Access into Koloa and Po‘ipu will be limited to Koloa Road and Oma‘o Road until 6:30 a.m. During the period from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m., there will be no inbound traffic other than emergency vehicles into Koloa and Po‘ipu.
Po‘ipu Road will be closed from Kapili Road to the Ala Kinoiki, or Koloa Bypass road, from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m.
Ho‘onani Road will be closed from 5 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. from Lawa‘i Road to Kapili Road. Traffic will continue to flow in and out of the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort via Kapili Road.
Koloa Road inbound lane from Highway 50 will be closed from 6:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
The outbound lane from Koloa Road to Highway 50 will remain open, but will be significantly impacted between 6:30 and 8 a.m. due to the number of half marathon runners exiting Oma‘o Road during this period.
Lauoho Road, Waha Road and Pu‘u Road will be closed to through traffic from 7:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. All residents living in these areas are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Oma‘o Road from Highway 50 to Koloa Road will be closed to through traffic from 6:30 until 9:30 a.m. Residents living in this area are advised to use extreme caution.
Ala Kinoiki, or the Koloa Bypass road, will be closed from 6 until 7:30 a.m.
Maluhia Road, both inbound and outbound to and from the Koloa Bypass road through to Highway 50, will be closed to traffic from 6 to 7:45 a.m.
Traffic on Maluhia and the Koloa Bypass roads are expected to return to normal by 8 a.m.
Partial closures
Highway 50 from Maluhia Road west to Oma‘o Road will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic in the mauka, or mountainside, lane from 6:30 until approximately 8:30 a.m. Traffic flow at both Maluhia Road and Oma‘o Road will be monitored by KPD officers.
Papalina Road from Waha to Pu‘u roads will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic in the mauka, or mountainside, lane from 7:15 a.m. until noon. Traffic flow will be monitored by KPD officers at both ends.
As runners make their way back to Po‘ipu via Papalina, Waha, Lauoho and Koloa roads, the roads will re-open once all of the runners have passed.
Ala Kalanikaumaka, or the Kukui‘ula Bypass road, will be closed from 6:15 a.m. until 2 p.m. Outbound traffic from the Po‘ipu roundabout to Koloa Road will remain open.
The Po‘ipu roundabout will be heavily impacted and traffic will be slowed considerably from 6:45 a.m. until 2 p.m. as runners enter the roundabout from Ala Kalanikaumaka, or the Kukui‘ula Bypass road.
Westbound Lawa‘i Road and Spouting Horn traffic will be re-routed through The Shops at Kukui‘ula.
