PUHI — Five Kaua‘i High School girls fired over 200 points to lead the Red Raiders to sweep the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation preseason air riflery match at the Island School range Saturday.
Sean Magoun, coach for the Island School Voyagers, host of the event, was pleased, despite the fact Kapa‘a High School could not field its team due to commitments at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair.
“I thought things went exceedingly well, except for running behind a bit,” Magoun said in an email. “It gave everyone an opportunity to shoot within a competition environment and see what it is like.”
Island School has one returning shooter, senior Kimi Franny, with five freshman girls; four took the range during the preseason event.
Kaua‘i girls led the field with 1,087 points followed by Waimea High School with 1,023 points and Island School ending with 682 points.
On the boys’ range, Kaua‘i also stayed ahead with 1,020 points to Waimea’s 975 points and Island School’s 813 points.
Waimea’s Kayla Ishida, coming off a strong showing during the Mokihana Aquatics Fun (swim) Meet last week, topped all girls with a total 236 (88-83-65) points, tying Kaua‘i’s Meghan Leary with 88 points in the prone position.
Menehune captain Nikki Acoba topped all shooters with a 90 in the prone position en route to ended at 213 (90-72-51) points, the returning Waimea shooter noting how she wants the team to get to states.
Following the two Menehune leaders, Jackie Taylor (91-44-64-199), Mariah Paiste (81-61-50-192) and Jessica Tangalin (75-69-39-183) accounted for the Waimea girls’ scoring while Amanda Rita (77-67-32-176) and Kisha Esposo (66-48-47-161) were able to gain experience on the range.
Kaua‘i’s lead was shared between Brooke Hornos (84-71-75-230) and Kristyn Yamamotoya (85-82-63-229), Hornos claiming the highest score in the standing position for the girls at 75.
Sara Koide, getting the No. 3 score for the Red Raiders, marked the highest kneeling position score for the girls at 85 en route to her 220 (84-85-51).
Leary and Jamie McDermott (75-73-54-202) rounded out the scoring Red Raiders.
Emma Leary (85-69-45-199), Cheyanne Tannery (74-67-27-168) and Joelle Patricio (70-50-44-164) made up the Kaua‘i girls’ field.
Franny topped the Island School scoring with 178 (75-55-48) followed by freshmen Jessica Raitz (73-48-21-142), Jordan Macklin (74-39-21-134), Alex Orbert (69-29-30-128) and Laura Macklin (53-12-35-100).
The Nos. 4 and 5 shooters for Kaua‘i proved pivotal for the Red Raiders as its top three boys fired over 200 points apiece.
Brandon Iida (82-63-50-195) and Colby Ihara-Takase (79-71-44-194) gave the Red Raider boys the boost it needed to hold off the Waimea challenge.
Brandon Chun topped the Kaua‘i boys at 214 (85-62-67) followed closely by Matthew Kawamura at 212 (74-70-68) and Hikari Oberman at 205 (79-71-55). Richard Garcia, at 184 (74-53-57), was the alternate.
Jaron Parongao topped the Waimea boys with 225 (84-77-64) followed by Anthony Daligcon (88-77-56-221), Kris Toma (85-80-40-205), Weston Souza (82-68-21-171) and Sean dela Cruz (51-57-45-153).
Island School’s Marcus Punua finished with the highest overall boys’ score, but the Voyagers fell short when only four boys turned out to shoot, the overall team scoring including five scores.
Punua ended the day on a 233 (88-82-63), including notching the highest score for boys in the kneeling position.
He was followed by Cole Moore (90-68-65) who ended the day with the highest boys score in the kneeling position at 90.
Micah Kimi (82-72-47-201) and Damien Lynch (76-43-37-156) rounded out the boys’ field.
The first match of the KIF season starts Wednesday when Kaua‘i High School hosts Waimea and Island School travels to the Kapa‘a High School campus with both matches starting at 3 p.m.
