Neighborhood Pride award
The Greenes, who will be honored Saturday, made a flag lot on Laipo Road their home after visiting Hawai‘i for decades, according to a news release.
According to the release, Dennis is a five week “here” and a five week “there” Halliburton oilfield guy. Currently it’s Malaysia. But more than 38 years ago, it was Singapore. He fell “crazy in love” with Suzanne, a native of Singapore.
With work taking him all over the world, the couple’s base homes were in Singapore and then Texas, where a daughter still resides.
After searching all over Hawai‘i, they loved the land and the people of Kaua‘i. They designed their home on a view lot and moved in 2006.
Suzanne is in a hula halau, thus the need to grow flowers and maile. Because of the elevation, it takes “babying” to care for the plants.
They’ve gotten most of their plants from friends, which include many spices, plumerias and palm trees. Dennis comes home to tend to the flower beds, the big yard chores and a “honey do list.” But retirement is now only five months away.
They have “seashore grass,” which when treated with salt water, stays weed free, as is their entire manicured lot. With the feeling of being “caretakers of God’s land,” Suzanne is in the yard every morning with Leilani, their 7-year-old Australian Shephard.
No stranger to yard awards, they won twice for the best yard in their neighborhood in Houston.
Nominations for beautiful front yards in the 96746 zip code can be sent to committee chair, Helena Cooney at 822-1885 or e-mail helena1824@aol.com. The only criteria is the resident must do the work themselves.
