The Kiahuna Sports Futsal Club once again brought back a Dragon Boat Futsal Tournament championship, which was held from July 28 to July 29.
Futsal, commonly refered to as street soccer, was originated in Uruaguay. It is 5-on-5 and is played on a smaller field than traditional soccer.
The 16 and younger boys had success in the tournament going undefeated, outscoring its opponents 24-3 and ultimately securing the second title in two years for the Kiahuna Futsal Club.
Despite the success at the 16 and younger level, the same group of players, with the addition of a few adults from the club, decided to enter the Adult Open Division. Not only did they hold their own, but they again went undefeated in three games outscoring its opponents 11-4, and once again secured the championship for the club giving them two over the weekend. The Adult Open Division team consisted of: Krieg Medeiros, Ben Tehrani, Satvir Dhahr, Biijan Suleimani, Kellan Wortmann, Coner Turley, Lucas Gushikuma, Kyle Napolean, Chito Aguilar and Head Coach and Director of Kaihuna Sport Futsal Club Jorge Bordt.
Bordt, a former U.S. Futsal national team captain, has been working with many of the boys for the past three years and has made an impression on some of the parents.
“I have been fortunate to have met coach Bordt,” said Robert Medeiros in an email, father of Krieg Medeiros, who is a member of the 16 and youger team. “We who have witnessed his training sessions have benefited from hearing his knowledge being passed on to the youth.”
Bordt and the club is not unfamiliar with success as last year the 9 and younger club also coached by Bordt brought the Dragon Boat title to Kaua‘i. These same boys played up in age in the 12 and younger age group this year. The team consisting of Dwight Apao, Mason Hunt, Conor Hunt, Ben Griep, Kaeo Rezentes, Whitney Lugo, Nicky Semblante and Ha’o Trugillo came up short playing against the older age group. However, according to Medeiros, they won the hearts of many who watched them play as they demonstrated their skill and passion for the game even though they were half the size of the competion.
