NAWILIWILI — Nine ticks separated the first and second place finishers Thursday when the Nawiliwili Yacht Club launched its three-race Wahine Series under 10 to 18-knot winds out of the north northeast and smooth ocean conditions.
With Alison Fonari at the stick, OZone, one of four Olson 30s in the fleet, eked out a lead and held on to cross first on a 55:24 elapsed time and correcting to 55:29 PHRF for first place honors in the opening race.
Papa‘au, an Express 27 with Marcie Millet, held the second spot coming in from the Ninini Point turnaround, but was overtaken by Fast Company at the line, Papa‘au finished third overall on a 58:07 elapsed sail, but correcting to 55:38 PHRF, nine second below OZone.
Fast Company, crossing second overall at 55:58 elapsed at the hand of Jakki Nelson, 34 seconds behind OZone, correcting to 56:03 PHRF for the third place berth.
Bonjolea, with Bonnie Tiffany at the wheel, crossed at 59:17 elapsed and corrected to 57:00 PHRF for the No. 4 spot. Bonjolea also corrected to 49:32 club for top honors in that class.
Speedy, with Yara Machado at the stick, crossed at 1:02:39 elapsed and corrected to 1:02:45 PHRF, followed by Weatherly, the newest Olson 30 to the NYC fleet with Schale Ame at the stick, crossed at 1:02:55 elapsed, just 16 seconds back of Speedy, and corrected to 1:03:01 PHRF. Coyote, with Karen Cole at the wheel, crossed at 1:13:06 elapsed and corrected to 1:08:28 PHRF to round out the field.
The wahine series, with just two more races remaining, returns to the water Thursday and the public is invited to view the competition from the jetty wall area when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
