PUHI — James Kawaihalau shot an even par 72 to win the Men’s Championship flight with a one-over par 145 (73-72) when the Kaua‘i Amateur event wrapped up Sunday at the Puakea Golf Course.
Playing 6,954 yards in two days of great golf course conditions and weather, Pono Tokioka, a Kaua‘i High School golfer, closed the 36-hole stroke play event with a 153 (76-77) for second place.
He was challenged by Matias Rodriguez of Lihu‘e finishing three strokes back (79-77-156) for third place.
Kaua‘i Junior Golfers Bryden Salvador of Kilauea (80-79) and Kenji Miyata of Kapa‘a (86-73) finished tied at 159.
Rick Semonion (82-80-162), Doug O’Keeffee (83-80-163), Sam Pratt (83-80-163), Keegan Loo (80-86-186), Jamie Amimoto (85-84-169), Jeff Nash (81-89-170) and Alex Soto (82-91-173) rounded out the flight.
Men’s A Flight
Steve Crago of Kapa‘a played 6,471 yards, finishing with a two-day 158 (77-81) to clinch the Men’s A Flight.
Al Castillo Jr. (82-83-165), Drew Vento (89-83-172), Kamu Kawaihalau (92-84-176), Jules Cannon (95-85-180) and Daniel O’Connell (94-92-186) rounded out the field.
Men’s Senior Flight
Andrew Nickles fired a 163 (80-83) to capture the Men’s Senior Flight, playing 6,061 yards.
Robert Valencia Jr. (89-82) and Curtis Law (82-89) finished tied for second with a two-day 171.
Steve Oberg (88-87-175) finished a stroke ahead of George Pasley (89-87-176), challenged by Bill Kessler (91-87-178) and Phil Zeidner (92-87-179). Al Nishek (101-92-193) and James Allen (108-101-209) rounded out the flight.
Women’s Flight
Pearl Ferguson of Wailua topped the Women’s Flight at 5,225 yards, finishing the two-day match with a 167 (85-82). Regina Ventura (88-88-176), Stella Bumacod (88-94-182) and Amy Stewart (108-113) rounded out the flight.
Women’s Senior
Sharron Weber (86-87) of Lihu‘e held off Cynthia Swain of Kapa‘a on the second day of the tournament to finish with a 173, two strokes ahead of Swain (90-85-175).
Susie Nishek (90-99) and Wendy Akita (94-95) tied for third place with a two-day total 189. JoAnn Kihano (93-99-192), Gussie Schumacher (107-102-209) and Mae Sperry (111-110-221) rounded out the flight.
