LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a High School Junior Varsity football team churned up six touchdowns in an explosive second quarter to wrap up a 52-8 win over the Kalani High School JV Saturday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.
Following a see-saw first quarter which started on a JV Warrior fourth down miscue, Kalani held a slim 8-7 lead at the buzzer.
But Kapa‘a asserted itself when Shain Davis, taking a pitch from Chaz Pacleb, tapped paydirt with just 14 ticks peeled off the clock in the second period.
Christian Rapozo, finishing with four point-after boots and an interception for touchdown, did the PAT for the 13-8 go-ahead from where the Warriors never looked back.
Matt Cummings pounced on a loose pigskin, the first of two fumble recoveries in the period, on the Falcons’ 15-yard line to set up a Junard Mata scamper to paydirt at the 9:29 mark.
Kalani had no chance to recover as Johnny Levinthol snared another loose ball and ran it back 14 yards for another score at the 8:56 mark for the 25-8 reading.
Interrupted by an injury which prompted the inaugural run of the American Medical Response mobile ambulance, the period dragged on until the final three minutes when Kapa‘a exploded for three more scores, the first of the flurry coming when Rapozo plucked a Falcon air ball and settled it on the Kalani 18-yard line with 3:27 remaining in the half.
As the sun began its descent, Pacleb hit Nainoa Soto for the 32-8 go-ahead with 2:30 still showing.
Another Falcon turnover 21 seconds later pushed Kapa‘a further ahead when Wylan Kamoku plucked another Falcon pass and ran it back 32 yards, Rapozo’s PAT settling the board on a 39-8 JV Warrior lead.
But Kapa‘a could not stop, Keahi Tabura snaring another Kalani pass at the 1:57 mark. The play was capped by a 15-yard Pacleb to Leslee Aki scoring pass with more than a minute left in the half for the 45-8 Kapa‘a reading.
Pacleb iced the win in the third quarter on a 5-yard keeper with Rapozo booting his final PAT of the night at the 2:12 mark for the 52-8 reading, triggering the running clock.
