‘The Garden Island’ hires two reporters
LIHU‘E — Laurent Canalejas and Rick Killeen have joined The Garden Island as reporters.
Canalejas was previously a curator at the Hilo Art Museum several years ago and before that, taught French, literature and film at the University of California at Riverside for about five years.
Canalejas holds a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from the American University of Paris. While a student, he started a small theater company with a friend in Paris. He also is a filmmaker of comedies such as “Greg Brown, The Savior,” “The Porn Star,” and “Departure Part 2, The Return.”
Canalejas was born in Paris in 1966 and said, in true comedic form, “I ran away from the circus at 10 and came back for lunch at noon. I have been celebrating the Anglo-American language ever since I chewed on my first Bazooka Joe. Both my teeth and publications attest to it.”
In the United States, he earned a master’s degree in comparative literature from San Francisco State University in the 1990s, which, he said “were great times but what am I, I wasn’t there in the ’60s.”
Canalejas has lived in Hawai‘i for 6 years. At TGI, he has initiated a new column titled “Lite Rapture,” reflecting his interest in literature, in the Lifestyle section.
Killeen has joined The Garden Island as a sports reporter.
He is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area where he was heavily involved in the sports scene at the high school and youth levels. He moved to Kaua‘i three years ago where he has continued coaching youth baseball.
He also has designed web pages, including the Kaua‘i Museum’s.
As sports reporter, he said, “I am dedicated to transforming the current sports page into a local hub for readers to come to, for not only human interest stories but game information, both at high school and youth events.”
