Kikue Gushiken
Kikue “Kay” Gushiken passed away at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on July 24, 2012 at the age of 97. She was born on July 14, 1915 in Kilauea. Kikue worked for many years as a cook/housekeeper for those who resided at the Kilauea Manager’s House.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tokumatsu Gushiken and son, Spencer; siblings, James Miyasaki, Hisashi Miyasaki, Masami Maruta, Tomie Miyasaki and Haruko Miyashiro.
She is survived by sons, Jack (Sharon), Alan, Ralph (Jill), and Leslie (Donna); siblings, Hidemi (Doris) Miyasaki, Katsuyo (James) Inafuku, Wakayo Fukumoto and Yuriko (Gerry) Sakai; 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in Kilauea on August 11, 2012, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at the Church cemetery.
Family suggests casual attire and flowers be omitted.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Gushiken family with arrangements.
G. Philip Bickel
G. Philip Bickel of Lihue died on August 3, 2012, at the age of 86 at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. He was born on April 10, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy (1950-53), followed by a 30-year career in 3M Company in Japan and Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Warren Bickel.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Bickel; daughters, Lindsay (Greg) Kamm of Lihue, and Cinthia (Bill) Walker of Massachusetts; brother, Alan (Doris) Bickel of Pennsylvania; sister, Elizabeth Tunilo of Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue, with a reception following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Rotary Club of Poipu or St. Michael’s Endowment Fund.
Felicidad Quel
Felicidad Bueno Quel of Hanama‘ulu died at home on July 28, 2012, at the age of 92. She was born in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines on May 9, 1920, and was a dedicated homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her son, Henry Quel, and great-granddaughter, Anjannette Duyanen, parents, Crispolo and Geromine Bueno.
She is survived by her husband, Luis Quel of Hanama’ulu; one son, Pacifico “Pat” (Clementine) Quel of Hanama‘ulu; two daughters, Elsie Ollado of California and Norma Vida of California; 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, five great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
