LIHU‘E — The status of one survivor of the deadly van crash in Lihu‘e on Saturday has changed.
The 24-year-old woman who was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in serious condition is no longer listed as admitted, a county spokesperson said. The woman was apparently released yesterday. Her condition had been reported as stable since the Saturday morning accident.
A 21-year-old Kapa‘a woman who was airlifted via medevac to Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu remains in critical condition with no update.
A 27-year-old Kapa‘a man was transported to Wilcox hospital with serious injuries.
He was treated and released, an earlier County of Kaua‘i release states.
The crash killed the driver, Christopher Santiago, 31, and one passenger, Eryn O’Shaughnessy, 23, both from Kapa’a. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the county spokesperson, an autopsy will be conducted on the driver early this week.
Any results, including toxicology, won’t be available to the public for at least two weeks.
Kaua‘i Police Department reported that a van ran out of control on Rice Street near Mokoi Street on Saturday around 2 a.m.
The van was traveling downhill toward Nawiliwili when it reportedly hit a guardrail to the right, then traveled across the road and up an embankment, before crossing the road again where it went down an embankment, striking a tree.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
There have been six traffic fatalities so far this year on Kaua‘i.
