KAPA‘A — Gates to the second day of the Heiva I Kaua‘i open at 8:30 a.m., and the Michael Drake ‘ohana will lead a Samoan fire knife dance workshop at Kapa‘a Beach Park.
Following the solo division competition, which took place Saturday and marked the opening day of the two-day Tahitian dance competition and festival, the group competition fills the Sunday agenda with ‘Te ‘E ‘A O te Turama from the Big Island doing its presentations in otea, drumming and ahupurotu.
The presentation will be punctuated with special presentations from Kawailehua, a halau from California who will present an ahupurotu exhibition along with Te Vai Ura Nui of Honolulu, Tamatea Nui o Kaua‘i and Hula Halau O Leilani. Following the morning workshop on fire knife dancing, the Drake ‘ohana is also slated to do a demonstration on the fire knife dance.
Audience participation activities include a coconut husking and grating contest with judging by Ione Teri‘ipaia, the director of judges. Food booths offering a variety of local favorites are available, including one helping Hulali Kiyoko Rivera, a 1-year-old infant battling tumors in her head, requiring off-island trips to treat the tumors.
Also available are a variety of craft vendors as well as a silent auction.
