Kaua‘i police have identified the two persons who died as a result of an early morning crash on Rice Street today. The driver is identified as Christopher Santiago, 31, of Kapa‘a. The deceased passenger is identified as 23-year-old Eryn O’Shaughnessy, also of Kapa‘a. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third victim has was airlifted via medevac to Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu, where she remains in critical condition. Two additional passengers were admitted to Wilcox Hospital in serious condition.
At approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning, a van traveling down the hill toward Nawiliwili, about one-tenth of a mile past Mokoi Street, hit a guardrail on the right side of the road, careened across all lanes and ran up the hillside on the left side of the road, then careened back across the road, went over the cliff and struck a tree, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
All occupants of the vehicle were adults, and the names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the release states.
KPD closed Rice Street from Mokoi Street to the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club entrance until roughly 8 a.m. so they could complete their investigation. The roadway is now open.
There have been six traffic fatalities so far this year on Kaua‘i.
