HONOLULU — New unemployment data for June brought some doubt about the health of Kaua‘i’s job market.
Kaua‘i’s unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, rose to 8.7 percent in June from 8.0 percent, a Hawai‘i State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations report states.
The state jobless rate, seasonally adjusted, inched up to 6.4 percent from 6.3 percent. The national rate remained the same at 8.2 percent. Both rates account for hiring patterns that accompany regular events such as summer vacation.
Of the islands, Molokai, part of Maui county, experienced the highest unemployment rate of 15.3 percent in June. Hawai‘i county had 10.1 percent, followed by Kaua‘i. The island of Maui had 7.4 percent and Honolulu had 6.4 percent.
Lanai had 2.2 percent, the lowest unemployment in June, the only island experiencing a decrease in unemployment since May when it was 2.6 percent. All rates are not seasonally adjusted.
