KAPA‘A – Looking for a rare laugh out loud community event? Starting today, Women in Theater, more commonly referred to as WIT, is offering an elaborate trio of short plays that will challenge your wit while testing how much laughter your guts can take.
Women in Theater, a subscriber based 501(c)(3) organization governed by a board of seven-to-nine members, was conceived in 2000 by Roberta Wallace Cable, today’s WIT president, and Sandi O’Shaughnessy. The two women shared an interest in creating more opportunities for amateur theater on Kaua‘i and more opportunities for powerful role models. While WIT invites all community members to participate, a special emphasis is placed on creating positive role models and artistic opportunities for women.
“WIT constantly strives to create quality theatrical experiences for the Kaua‘i community that provoke, inspire and share the joy of live theater with audiences and performers alike,” said the company’s vice president, Romey Curtis. Curtis graduated from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and has shared her talents on stage and for the TV and cinema industries for several decades.
With past cast members ranging from four to 74 years of age, WIT brings together diverse participants and audiences.
The theater company is also committed to showing original work by Kaua‘i community members whenever possible. It has so far succeeded in producing one show per year that is originally written by a resident of the community.
For $15 at the door, audience members can watch “The Guest Lecturer” by A.R. Gurney; “Committed” by Frank Reilly; and “Church Ladies” by Anne Welsh. These three short plays are of a highly-comical standard. As for the theater, it is cozy, intimate and boasts some real quality acoustic.
Centrally located with easy access and plenty of parking, “Kaua‘i Briefs” will take place at the Coconut MarketPlace, 4-484 Kuhio Highway, Kapa‘a, HI 96746 for two weekends only, on July 27, 28, 29, and on August 3, 4 and 5. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m., with matinees on Sundays at 5 p.m.
As if more testimony to the group’s professional dedication were needed, most of those who started WIT more than a decade ago are still together, and none of them seems to be at her wit’s end when it comes to keeping Kaua‘i’s community roaring with laughters.
