The Umetsu family was out in force — all five members taking the court during the Koloa Plantation Days tennis doubles tournament benefiting the Kaua‘i United Way Sunday at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
Hot sun and clear skies dominated two days of play, which was wrapped up by a special keiki event to tie in with the theme Celebrating Plantation Roots through the eyes of our Keiki. There were prizes for the aspiring court warriors at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
On the men’s side of the Umetsu ‘ohana, Randy teamed with Calvin Umetsu and finished as the finalist in the Mens C Division, dropping to eventual champions Ron Olen and Jim Sullivan.
On the women’s side of the family, Rachel and Katelyn Umetsu teamed up to take the Women’s C Division over mom Donna who teamed with Anna Hartsell and ending as a finalist in the division.
Jennifer Hrlejac and Sue Anderson topped the Women’s A division over Jamie Honda and Mari Anderson, while Veronica Wilkie and Rosemary Smythe teamed to take the Women’s B division over Paulette and Tiffany Lum, a mother-daughter team.
On the men’s side of the court, Herb Noe teamed with Charlie Ortiz to take the Men’s A Division over Dylan Werhly and Jerik Centeno, one of Kaua‘i High School’s tennis leaders.
Earlier, Noe was relegated to finalist status when Werhly teamed with University of Hawai‘i player Chas Okamoto to take the Men’s A play during the Spring Challenge.
Kimo Honda paired with Chris Ajimura to take the Mens B Division over Jerry Green and Roy McDonald.
Next on the tennis calendar is the Fall Challenge Men’s and Women’s Doubles taking place Oct. 13 and 14.
