KALAHEO — Kaua‘i Police Department on Monday released the name of the suspect in Saturday’s shooting in Kalaheo as William Ray Seibert, age 67.
According to a county press release, detectives have confirmed that Seibert died of a self-inflicted single gunshot wound to his head, consistent with witness accounts of the event.
Police also report that the neighbor who suffered a heart attack from witnessing Saturday’s shooting has died.
Bryant Hironaka, age 59, of Kalaheo, reportedly died Monday at Queen’s Hospital where he was medevaced early Sunday in critical condition from Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, according to the news release. An earlier report had stated Hironaka was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
The incident began at around 4:15 p.m. when Seibert, armed with a handgun, reportedly walked from his house on Pu‘uwai Road to his neighbor’s home across the street.
The couple who lived in the home noticed Seibert approaching and quickly ran inside, locking the door behind them.
Seibert fired multiple shots at the couple through the front door before turning the gun on himself.
The intended victims escaped injury, but Hironaka, another neighbor who witnessed the incident, apparently suffered a heart attack.
The incident remains under investigation.
