NAWILIWILI — Papa‘au and Bonjolea hold the series’ leads for the PHRF Open and Club Open classes, respectively following the finishes on Thursday at Nawiliwili Harbor.
Papa‘au, finishing fourth overall in the horse, or big boat, phase and first in the pony, or Topper, phase on Thursday clings to the lead of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Horse and Pony Series with just one race remaining in the series.
Papa‘au crossed the line on a 41:35 elapsed sail and corrected to 39:48 PHRF, good for third overall. Papa‘au built on that positioning, its Topper steadily working the 10 to 15-knot winds out of the north-northeast to capture top honors in the pony phase for four points in the Open Class and three points in the Club Class, the Open Class points counting towards its overall 14-point lead.
But with four points separating first and fourth place, overall, the series will come down to this Thursday’s final race for the series winner.
Bonjolea, with Bonnie Tiffany at the wheel, let out a whoop as the X-342 slipped across the finish line on a 40:23 elapsed sail, third overall and just 10 seconds ahead of OZone.
Correcting to 38:59 PHRF, Bonjolea took top placement in the horse phase and a second finish by its pony saw the Tiffany crew lock up overall Open Class standings with three points for an effective 15 points overall, just one point back of Papa‘au.
Fast Company remains solid in third overall at 17 points after the horse crossed on a 39:06 elapsed and corrected to 39:10 PHRF and its pony ended in fourth place.
OZone, crossing the horse phase at 40:13 elapsed and correcting to 40:17 PHRF, finished its pony in third place for a tie with Fast Company, but overall ending with 18 points for fourth place.
Speedy rounds out the fleet, its horse crossing on a 44:26 elapsed sail and correcting to 44:30 PHRF and its pony finishing fifth for 10 points, placing it fifth overall at 26 points.
The public is invited to view the competition when the NYC Race Committee hosts the final race of the four-race Horse and Pony Series with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
