WAILUA — Kapa‘a High School will meet Waimea on Saturday for the final ‘7-on-7’ football game starting at 10 a.m. at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park adjacent to Lydgate Park in Wailua
There will be just one game because the Menehune earlier announced they would not be fielding a Junior Varsity football squad for the 2012-2013 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation calendar.
The Red Raiders have been successful in the “Pass Only” league which started June 23, winning all of its matches in the Varsity division.
Saturday was no exception as fans, surviving a passing bout with rain dropping out of a windless sky, watched the Red Raiders score on the first play from scrimmage against the Kapa‘a varsity.
Up the two touchdowns, Kapa‘a got a big break on dual fouls against the Red Raiders in the first half, but could only settle for getting into the red zone.
Under format rules for the ‘7-on-7’ league, each team has three downs to get to the red zone.
Once in the red zone, the team gets four downs to score with play being supervised by a KIF-certified football official.
Failure to score turns the ball over and any advance is called back to the mid-field stripe where the opposing team takes over.
Kaua‘i, well-equipped to separate its offensive, garbed in white, and defensive, sporting red jerseys, players with different colored jerseys worked its defense against two Warrior quarterbacks, Kapa‘a being held scoreless until the final play before the half.
Similarly, the second half saw Kaua‘i go up and Kapa‘a being held outside the end zone until the final play of the game when the Warriors notched its second score of the game.
The KIF tackle football season starts Aug. 10 with a pre-season game when the Waiakea Warriors of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation visit Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
On Aug. 11, primary election day, Kaua‘i will host Waialua at Vidinha Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
The first regular-season game will feature Waimea traveling to Vidinha Stadium against Kaua‘i, Aug. 31, with the JV kicking off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity match getting underway at 7:30 p.m.
