• Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, has been meeting with government representatives since 2004 about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Mayor’s Office
Da Shadow: There is $5 million in the budget for FY13 for new equipment. What kind of equipment will be purchased.
County: (June 29) This budget includes a heavy investment in new equipment in many departments, including: Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Fire, Police, and Transportation. The proposed purchases range from new police and fire vehicles, to a new forklift and aerial lift truck in Parks and Recreation, to excavators, bush whackers and wood chipping machines in Public Works. This equipment is essential in our ability to provide timely services and maintain facilities, and will allow us to reduce overtime by adequately equipping our workforce. For the Transportation Agency, we are proposing the purchase of a GPS system to be utilized on buses to improve efficiency and mobilization of resources as needed.
Isenberg Park
Da Shadow: What’s the update on fixing the playground equipment at Isenberg?
County: (June 29) The play equipment at Isenberg Park will now be completely replaced. Attempts to work with the vendor whose equipment is there to make repairs have failed, so the remainder of the playground will be dismantled and removed (only posts and a few footings remain) and the site will be put out for bid in FY 12-13 for an entire new playground.
Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center
Da Shadow: Tree branches are obstructing the parking lot lights and the sign for Ke Ala Hele Makalae. When will they be trimmed?
County: (June 29) Any limbs that can be handled from ground level will be addressed by Parks staff. Those that require a lift truck for trimming will be referred out to the Public Works Roads Division for trimming via a work order.
