KOLOA — The Koloa Plantation Days celebration starts today with preliminary roping and American West Barrel Racing at the CJM Country Stables and wraps up July 29 with the Family Fun Run/Walk as well as the Keoki’s Ukes in Paradise Keiki ‘Ukulele Competition, a new event for this year’s celebration.
“This year’s theme is ‘Through the Eyes of Our Keiki,’” said Melissa McFerrin, the event coordinator. “Niles Kageyama, the ‘ukulele teacher at Koloa Elementary School, said he remembers going fishing in Waita Reservoir as a youngster.”
The memory triggered a slew of new events geared for keiki and youth, McFerrin said.
The Keoki’s Ukes in Paradise is one of those events, the competition geared for keiki and youth with special prizes.
Saturday, youngsters can re-live Kageyama’s past of fishing at Waita Reservoir from 1 to 4 p.m. by making reservations at Kaua‘i ATV.
Keiki are featured during the Po‘ipu Kai Charity Tennis Summer Challenge on Sunday when young tennis players between 7 to 14 years old are invited for free tennis play and games from 2 to 4 p.m., leaving lots of time for keiki to participate in the Miniature Golf Tournament, which unfolds at the Lawa‘i Beach Resort starting at 10 a.m.
McFerrin also noted the Mixed Plate – Live Music event, which is in its second year, at the Old Koloa Town Courtyard on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
“This event replaced the former cooking show,” McFerrin said.
“Everything comes together July 28 for the annual historic parade and park celebration at the Anne Knudsen Park.”
