LIHU‘E — A recent chemical fire in a Kaua‘i Recycles bin has raised serious safety concerns for workers that handle recyclables, and has prompted officials to issue a reminder about proper recycling.
The public is urged to empty any unused product and thoroughly rinse bottles prior to recycling those that contained chemicals such as bleach or cleansers. By removing any residue left in these types of containers, it will help to prevent hazardous conditions from occurring.
Food containers with thick residues should also be rinsed before they are placed in a Kaua‘i Recycles bin, while beverage containers are acceptable without rinsing.
Currently, there are eight Kaua‘i Recycles drop bin sites throughout the island, including: Hanalei transfer station; at the end of Kahau Road past the Kapa‘a skate park; K-Mart back parking lot in Lihu‘e; Brennecke’s Beach Broiler parking lot in Po‘ipu; Lawa‘i Post Office; ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center; Waimea Canyon Park; and the Kekaha Landfill.

Anyone with questions about proper recycling can visit the county website, www.kauai.gov/recycling or call the County Recycling Office at 241-4837.
