LIHU‘E — With many summer programs coming to an end and the first day of school looming two weeks away, youngsters can take advantage of this window to plan their entries for the Lego Contest, which is part of the Home Economics Show at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair, Aug. 23 through 26.
Lenore Klass, president of the Kaua‘i Association for Family and Community Education program, said this year the Fair Committee has designated three groups in the youth-only Lego Contest.
The first group is for youth ages 7 and younger, the second group is for youth ages 8 through 12, and the third group is for teens ages 13 through 17.
Klass said that with this change, youngsters won’t be competing against teenagers.
First on the agenda for the contestants is to pick up a copy of the “General Information and Rules,” which is available at any library or neighborhood center on Kaua‘i or at the University of Hawai‘i Cooperative Extension Service Office located in Room 210 of the State Building in Lihu‘e.
“It is very important to read the ‘General Information and Rules’ before making one’s fair entry plans,” Klass said.
“We don’t want disqualifications for not following the rules. Many of the items in the Home Economics Show has been changed, so it is doubly important to be informed.”
In the Lego Contest, youth create an original item using Legos. No kits are allowed and participants may enter only one item in a specific age group.
Judging will be by the Danish System, which is explained fully in the General Information and Rules.
Some of the other contests in the Home Economics Show include a quilting contest for adults only. The quilts can be hand sewn or machine sewn, and another category is for quilted items.
A needlework contest can include crocheted or knitted items and other needlework including needlework lei.
Arts and crafts for adults include wood items, non-perishable lei, painting and other arts and crafts.
Contests in which youth and adults can participants include Christmas decor and recycled arts and crafts.
Baking contests for youth and adults include the Special Ingredient Contest, which features citrus, including limes, oranges, grapefruit, kumquat, tangerines in breads, muffins, cookies, cakes and confections.
The special Open Judging Baking Contest will feature a tropical fruit pie.
All of these contests are covered in the General Information and Rules, which contestants should read prior to embarking on a fair entry.
