LAWA‘I — Artist Fred Zollinger found a piece he never thought he would find — a rendering of a canoe fashioned out of the monkeypod wood that he once managed in Koloa.
“When they cut the trees, they called me to be in charge of the wood and one of the pieces went to this guy who was looking for a canoe log. Today, I found a print of the canoe,” said Zollinger, who maintains a studio across the road from the Lawa‘i Cannery Self Storage and Warehouse.
These are the kind of surprises that treasure-hunters found on Sunday at the Lawa‘i Cannery garage sale, held periodically to help support charities.
Neal Pigao of the Lawa‘i Cannery said there were 45 vendors spread out over the available units.
“It’s full,” Pigao said. “There were a lot of people here and if we had more spaces, we would have had more vendors.
We even have a person who came all the way from Hanalei to have a space.”
Lorna Santos, who coordinates the sale, said they were receiving calls as late as Saturday afternoon and had to turn away vendors.
Space was at such a premium that Santos, who normally occupies a space and has a space set aside for the “Man Cave,” had to consolidate both areas into one jam-packed unit, having a monitor on hand to ensure nothing floated away in the stream of shoppers.
The Sunday sale benefited the Kaua‘i Special Olympics whose leaders were totally occupied with helping customers and the garage sale coinciding with a bread pickup.
“We’re going to do two more sales and take a break for a while,” Pigao said.
“The next sale will be on Sept. 23 to benefit the Waimea High School girls volleyball team. After that, we’ll have one on Nov. 18 to benefit St. Theresa School’s Washington, D.C., experience.”
Interested vendors can call Lawa‘i Cannery at 332-5959 and get their names on the list for future events or to get more information.
