LIHU‘E — Richard Aki and Jeff Vegas of the Kaua‘i Classic Cars recently presented The Salvation Army with several grocery carts filled with assorted non-perishable groceries.
The food collection represents the collection from the “Just for Dads” Auto Show held over the Father’s Day weekend at Kukui Grove Center. The event was coordinated by the Kaua‘i Volkswagen Club, the Kaua‘i Classic Cars and Kukui Grove Center.
Contributions were made by participants in the show which Harvey Maeda of the Kaua‘i Classic Cars described as one of the biggest events to date. Spectators also contributed to the collection and earned eligibility for door prizes as well as being entered into drawings.
“This is the first time the auto enthusiasts donated to The Salvation Army,” said Maj. Mario Reyes of The Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps. “We are truly thankful and appreciative to everyone who donated to the cause.”
Accepting the contribution was The Salvation Army Cadet James Combs, who is on training assignment with The Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps.
The Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps serves families on the island by offering a range of services, including emergency assistance to families struggling to meet basic needs, states the Salvation Army website. That assistance can be in the form of food, clothing and payment of rental and basic utilities.
Additionally, the Lihu‘e Corps operates the Kokua Soup Kitchen, offering hot meals twice weekly to the hungry and homeless community.
This Kokua Soup Kitchen operates through the generosity, support and cooperation from the community’s churches, community leaders, businesses and volunteers.
