LIHU‘E — The Department of Land and Natural Resources has issued a high fire danger closure declaration to take effect immediately in Hunting Units A and J on the island of Kaua‘i.
“Due to the recent forest fires and extreme dry conditions, we are closing these forest areas for protection of natural resources and public safety,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR chairperson.
The closure will affect the upcoming goat and deer hunting seasons in those units.
The closure will remain in effect until conditions improve. Units A and J consist of portions of the Pu‘u Ka Pele Forest Reserve, Kekaha Game Management Area and Waimea Canyon State Park.
Hunting Units B, D, E, F, G, H and K will remain open as scheduled and will not be affected by the fire closure declaration.
Other portions of Waimea Canyon State Park, such as the Waimea Canyon Lookout and Polihale Pavilion, will remain open to the public. The trout fishing at the Pu‘u Lua Reservoir will also remain open as scheduled and will not be affected by the fire closure declaration. Trail 3 — Ha‘ele‘ele gate located at Hwy. 550 mile marker 12 will be open to access the Pu‘u Lua public fishing area only.
All other gates accessing from Koke‘e Road – Hwy. 550 into Units A and J to Contour Road — will remain closed until conditions improve and the fire closure declaration is lifted.
