State Apiarist Danielle Downey will be the featured speaker during the public meeting on bees Monday at the Kaua‘i Community College ETRO Room 114 located in the Electronics Technology Building.
The meeting, hosted by the KCC Apiary Program, the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture Apiary Program and the Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association, will start at 6 p.m. and is open to the public as well as beekeepers.
Downey will address the current efforts to mitigate the harmful impacts of the small hive beetle which was discovered on Kaua‘i on May 23.
In addition to the small hive beetle, Downey will discuss American foul brood, a very serious and harmful brood disease responsible for decimating Hawai‘i’s honeybee population in the early part of the 20th century, said James Trujillo of the KCC Apiary Program and the Kaua‘i Beekeepers Association.
Evidence of the disease was found on Maui during recent inspections by Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture Apiary Program staff, Trujillo said.
Downey will be available for questions following the presentation.
Call Trujillo at 346-7725 for more information.
