Hawaii’s top Rotary leader, Laurie Yoshida of Kaua‘i, was honored recently by the Honolulu City Council for her commitment to improving communities both locally and globally, according to a news release. Honolulu City Council member Tulsi Gabbard presented Yoshida with an Honorary Certificate for her accomplishments as District Governor for the past year.
“Laurie Yoshida exemplifies Rotary International’s dedication to unwavering leadership and commitment to ethics and excellence in the community, in the workplace, and around the globe,” Gabbard states in a press release. “Mahalo to all Rotarians for your outstanding efforts to support our communities.”
The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
Under Yoshida’s leadership, District 5000’s membership expanded to include 1,780 members. She also provided guidance and direction for more than 1,000 Rotarian community service projects, including 227 focused on helping Hawai‘i’s youth.
Projects include:
• Kaua‘i’s Hanalei Bay Rescue Tube Initiative: Installed rescue tubes on sections of beaches that did not have manned life guard stations.
• Statewide Keiki Dental and Vision Projects: Conducted at various age and grade levels, these projects offer screenings and education for children.
• Rotary Dictionary 5000 Project: Provided every Hawai‘i public school third grader statewide with a dictionary. The Rotary Dictionary 5000 Project’s goal is to support Rotary International’s focus on universal literacy for all.
Globally, an elementary school in the Philippines was also constructed with the help of the Rotary Club of Honolulu, the release states.
