WAIPIO, Oahu — Kobe Viloria gave up three runs in six innings of work Saturday and was joined by Aaron Renaud, who finished with three innings, giving up one run, as the Kaua‘i Bronco All-Stars broke a see-saw battle with a 5-4 win in nine innings at the Protect Our Nations Youth Mustang-Bronco Regional Tournament at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park.
The win helped by Austin Maghanoy smacking three hits and closed on a game-winning single from Chase Ibia gave Kaua‘i a split when the Kaua‘i Mustang All-Stars dropped its contest 11-4 to the Mililani-Blue after posting a win against Waianae on Friday.
Sixteen teams, including six from the Neighbor Islands, are vying to become state champions in their respective divisions, said Paul Connell, tournament chairperson.
The winners will advance to the PONY West Zone Mustang championship in Los Alamitos, Calif., and the Bronco championship in Whittier, Calif., scheduled for July 26 through 29.
Maui, one of the six Outer Island Mustang squads, posted a 12-7 win over Makakilo-Kapolei, the Mililani program completed a sweep when its Mililani Gold took an 8-4 win over Waianae. And Hilo, another of the Neighbor Island teams, topped Ewa and Ewa Beach, 10-6.
Bronco results include Hilo rolling over Windward 21-4 and Makakilo-Kapolei Broncos defeating Waianae, 22-1.
