KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a area is already host to a county-run sunshine market and a privately run farmers market within a shopping complex. Now a nonprofit is joining in.
All Saints’ Episcopal Church, located on Kuhio Highway, is offering its first community market this Saturday, and plans to have one every first Saturday thereafter from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the green fronting the church.
The market will not only offer fresh produce but also art, clothes, books, household items, jewelry and other crafts, and maybe even a church rummage sale, according
to David Murray, junior warden
at the church.
It will be “more like a traditional market in Europe, which is like a huge open air department store. You could buy everything at the market,” said Murray.
The fresh farm produce will be available for two hours, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
This market will complement two markets in the Kapa‘a area during the week, including the farmers market in the Coconut MarketPlace on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon as well as the county’s Sunshine Market at the Kapa‘a skatepark on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The All Saints’ market also coincides with First Saturdays in Old Kapa‘a Town, which starts at 5 p.m. and ends around 9 p.m.
“Maybe they’ll go to the market, go to dinner” and then participate in the artwalk, Murray said.
“We hope that the market will come to be a focal point for the community and also help to promote the sale of Kaua’i grown produce and Kaua’i-made products,” said Murray in a news release.
Murray said Saturday was an ideal day for the market, not just because other markets are available during the week.
“It’s an easy day for us to do it. When we have a preschool, it’s better not to have a lot of people on the church grounds,” he said.
Vendors must bring their own tents and tables. Bathrooms in the gym will be available for the public.
“This is our first venture so this is very much a learning experience,” said Murray.
