Monico Viernes
Monico V. Viernes of Hanama‘ulu, Kaua‘i, passed away on June 15, 2012, at Garden Isle Healthcare at the age of 98. He was born on Feb. 12, 1914, in the Philippines. He was a retired laborer for the sugar industry.
Monico is survived by his wife, Albina Viernes; son, Michael (Victoria) Viernes of Honolulu; two grandchildren, Megan and Micah; two brothers, Patrocinio (Agripina) Viernes and Adriano (Jovita) Viernes; and numerous relatives.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 3 at Immaculate Conception Church from 8 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Carolina Polintang
Carolina M. Polintang of Hanama‘ulu died at Garden Isle Health Care on June 22, 2012, at the age of 89. She was born in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on March 17, 1923, and retired as a housekeeper at Kaua‘i Resort.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vicente Polintang and Celedonia Maneja Polintang; brothers, Venancio, Tito, Andres, Oligario, Onorio, Bonifacio, Timoteo; and sisters, Modesta, Narcisa, Anastacia and Mercedes.
She is survived by her brother, Pedro Polintang of Hanamaulu; sister-in-law, Magdalena S. Polintang of Hanama‘ulu; nieces, Ludy Tumpap, Victoria (Manolo) Herrera, Rose (Bernie) Semana, Glory (Efren) Taylon, Betty Polintang and Dana (Danial) Garven; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, July 12, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Polintang family with arrangements.
Bert Nunes
Bert LeRoy Nunes of Kapa‘a died at home on June 23, 2012, at the age of 68. He was born in Kilauea, Kaua‘i, on Oct. 30, 1943, and retired as a tour director with Island Holiday Tours. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
He was preceded in death by his father Manuel Nunes.
He is survived by his son Brandon (Mie Akiike) Nunes of Honolulu; grandson, Alexander Akiike, granddaughter, Alexis Akiike; mother Sarah Nunes of Kapa‘a; siblings; Leslei Nunes, Mervin (Juanita) Nunes, Beverly Palama Nunes and Wendell Nunes; and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be announced at a later date.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Nunes family with arrangements.
Esmenia Belmonte
Esmenia Lucia Belmonte of Kilauea, Kaua‘i, passed away on June 23, 2012, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 81. She was born on March 21, 1931, in Kilauea. She was a retired supervisor at The Cliffs at Princeville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Timoteo and Eutropia Yadao; son, Patrick Belmonte; sister, Mary Cabacungan; and brother, “Nado” Yadao.
She is survived by her husband, Isidro Belmonte Sr. of Kilauea; sons, Isidro Belmonte Jr. of Kilauea, Andrew Belmonte of California and Eric (Crystal) Belmonte of Kilauea; daughter, Brandie (Ross) Pimental of Kapa‘a; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Jose (Jean) Yadao of Kapa‘a and Joseph (Theresa) Yadao of Kilauea; sisters, Josephine (Chris) Asuncion of Kilauea, Christina Constantino of Kilauea and Frances (Modesto) Bilog of California; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on July 6 at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Kilauea. Visitation will be at 8:30 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kilauea Japanese Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.
