HANALEI — The Hanalei Canoe Club dominated the Tai Hook regatta held Saturday by the Garden Island Canoe Racing Association at the Hanalei Bay.
Paddling pretty much in its own backyard, the Hanalei Canoe Club topped Na ‘Opio class with 134 points before surging ahead in the adult divisions to accumulate 330 points over its closest competitor, Pu‘uwai Canoe Club which finished with 190 points.
In Na ‘Opio class, Hanalei was challenged by Niumalu Canoe Club which finished just 12 points back of Hanalei with 122 points followed by Pu‘uwai fielding 71 points.
The order followed in the overall race, Hanalei posting 330 points followed by Pu‘uwai with 190 points and Niumalu ending with 165 points.
Other finishers included Namolokama (133 points), Kukui‘ula (119 points), Kaiola (109 points), West (75 points), Hokualele (60 points) and Koloa (42 points).
But Hanalei, taking top honors in the Men Novice A, Men Sophomore, Women Senior, Men Senior, Women Masters (60), Golden Women Masters (55), Women Open 4, and Men Open 4 finished ahead, supplementing its top finishes with four runner-up finishes, a third place and fifth place finishes.
Pu‘uwai, posing the strongest challenge in the adult class, came up with a first finish in the Senior Women Masters (50) and the Men Masters (40) as well as runner up finishes in the Senior Men Masters (50), Mixed Masters (40), third place finishes in the Men Masters (60), and the Women Masters (40) and two sixth place finishes.
In Na ‘Opio class, Hanalei built up its lead early, taking top honors in the Girls 10 and Under on a 25:53.9 quarter-mile run over Pu‘uwai (31:18.7) and Hokualele (31:57.5) for a 10-point start, Pu‘uwai getting eight points and Hokualele getting seven points. Hanalei and Hokualele fielded teams in the Boys 10 and Under, Hanalei capturing the top spot and 10 points on its 25:06.5 quarter-mile run over Hokualele’s 30:27.9 paddle.
The result put Hanalei up 20 points to Hokualele’s 15 points and from that point, Hanalei did not give up its lead.
The Kaiola Regatta is the next event on the GICRA calendar, scheduled for Saturday and hosted by the Kaiola Canoe Club.
