LIHU‘E — Sixteen more games of basketball are in the book after the third day of the 2012 Merv Lopes Basketball Classic completed Saturday at Kaua‘i High School and Island School.
The tournament, which features four divisions (Boys and Girls Division I and Boys and Girls Division II), will wrap up pool play this morning with two D2 Girls games. Following the end of pool play, the seeded playoff rounds will begin. The playoffs begin at 9 a.m. at Island School and 11 a.m. at Kaua‘i High School.
On Saturday at Kaua‘i High School, team Central improved its tournament record to 6-0 in the Boys DI category with two wins. Central defeated the UpCountry Kings 55-40 in the morning and came back in the afternoon with a 63-35 win over the Goblins. In other DI Boys games, Imua downed the Goblins 76-55 and Hanakila beat the UpCountry Kings 51-40. Results for the DI matches featuring Hanakila against Imua and Dream Hoops Elite against ‘Aiea Blazers were unavailable by press time.
In the Girls DI category, the Lady Raiders improved their record to 4-2 in the tournament with two wins. The Raiders began the day with a 31-23 win over the Kaua‘i Ballers and finished it with a 51-27 victory over the Westside Bajingas.
The Ballers were even on the day as they beat Maui Mayhem 22-20 in the morning.
The Mayhem fell to CitySide later in the afternoon, 36-31.
In D2 action, Team Central split its two games in the Boys category. Central downed UpCountry Kings – Black 55-40 but fell to Imua 36-31 in the afternoon.
Imua had the top scoring game of the day with a 76-55 win over Westside.
The UpCountry Kings – Red notched a 51-40 win over Hanakila and a 22-20 win over Dream Hoops elite to improve their overall record to 4-0 in the tournament.
UpCountry Kings – Black finished 1-1 on the day after falling to Dream Hoops Elite 23-31.
