Since November 1998, Joe’s On the Green, located at 2545 Kiahuna Plantation Drive in Po‘ipu, offers friendly island-style customer service, onolicious grinds and live Hawaiian music.
Owner Joe Batteiger greeted Kaua‘i Times with open arms, served an abundant array of delicious dishes and drinks and spoke with a down-to-earth attitude that was pleasant and comforting.
“We do breakfast, lunch and a heavy pupu menu 365 days a year,” Batteiger explained. “The menu is a local fare. … Michael Stauber has been my executive chef since day one and Michael makes my job easier by providing consistent food with a pretty killer view and atmosphere.”
Batteiger personally served three dishes and three drinks that were mouth-watering upon first sight.
Scattered upon the table was the “Super Joe Loco Moco” priced at $10, “Michael’s Bad Bone Ribs” priced at $12.50 and the “Kaua‘i Homegrown Salad” priced at $11.50. Accompanying the dishes were three tasty drinks: “Joe’s Mai Tai” priced at $7.50, “Cassie’s Cosmo” priced at $8 and the “Joe-Mosa” priced at $5.50.
“Give it a sample,” Batteiger said.
Batteiger sat down with me and before I knew it, we were grinding away. He and I talked story casually and I thoroughly enjoyed his company.
Stories of Hurricane ‘Iniki, what life was like in the early ’90s and his culinary history took me back to my boyhood days on Kaua‘i.
The “Super Joe Loco Moco” was hearty and filling. It is stacked with hamburger, two fried eggs on a platter of white rice and topped off with brown gravy.
Next up was the super juicy “Michael’s Bad Bone Ribs.” It’s a healthy slab of St. Louis cut ribs, grilled with barbecue sauce and served with coleslaw.
After tasting the ribs, my stomach could not take much more. “No more,” I said to Joe. The helping of delicious foods filled me to the brink.
“But there’s still the salad,” Batteiger said. Batteiger agreed on my terms, though, upon seeing my body slumped and motionless.
The “Kaua‘i Homegrown Salad” is packed with island-grown produce: tomatoes, red onions and avocados. It also comes with feta cheese, bay shrimp on mixed greens and is dressed with balsamic vinaigrette.
Visiting Joe’s On the Green is an unbelievable experience. Batteiger knows how to treat his customers and gives them the full island-style treatment: hospitality, great food and drinks.
