LIHU‘E — The state Department of Health announced this week it filed a notice of violation against a Puhi business for processing junk cars and scrap metal without proper permits.
“DOH has imposed a penalty of $94,800 and has ordered (Charles) Lee and PRC Corporation to cease accepting further solid waste and remove all solid waste from their property,” according to a state news release Monday.
DOH spokesperson Janice Okubo on Friday said the agency has to make sure pollutants such as oil and other car fluids are disposed off properly.
“He was doing all of that without any permits,” Okubo said of Lee and PRC.
The violations occurred at a facility at 1480 Kaumuali‘i Hwy. in Puhi, according to DOH.
Okubo said Lee and PRC allegedly began operating on Aug. 10, 2011.
“They were still operating when DOH inspected on Oct. 27, 2011,” said Okubo, adding that they operated a little over three months without a permit.
Lee and PRC may request a hearing to contest the allegations or order, according to DOH.
Lee and PRC could not be reached for comment by press time.
