LIHU‘E — With summer under way, officials with the Kaua‘i Police Department are urging motorists to drive safely.
KPD communications announced that the department would be increasing enforcement efforts across the island in the coming weeks. Officers are going to check for people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and other traffic violations.
“We want to encourage our motorists, particularly recent graduates and those who are on Kaua‘i for the summer, to make smart choices while behind the wheel,” said Assistant Chief of the Patrol Services Bureau Ale Quibilan. “Our hope is that our traffic enforcement efforts will act as a deterrent for unsafe driving and prevent incidents before they occur.”
During the month of May, officers issued 21 Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant arrests and a total of 2,433 citations. Of those citations, 287 were for speeding, 192 were for seatbelt violations and 164 were for using a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle.
According to KPD, there were six fatalities on Kaua‘i’s roadways in 2011 and three so far this year.
“Everyone can play a role in preventing traffic collisions,” Quibilan added. “Please drive safely and responsibly. It could save your life.”
