NUKOLI‘I — Five students graduating from high schools were honored and presented their $1,000 scholarships by the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce Tuesday during the Filipino Chamber of Commerce annual recognition dinner at Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
Brad Beeksma, Isabelle Curtis, Nathan Morales, Julie Ann Sagabaen and Carla Raquel Tuzon were the scholarship recipients presented by the Filipino Chamber’s Scholarship Committee chair Vonn Ramos, Marynel Valenzuela, the Filipino Chamber’s president, and a representative from the Mayor’s Office.
Beeksma, a graduate of Kaua‘i High School, plans to attend Biola University with a major in physical science before obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Curtis, another Kaua‘i High School graduate, has been accepted at San Diego State University to pursue a physical therapy degree, hoping to specialize in children and athletics.
Morales, a graduate of Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama campus, will pursue a career in Electrical Engineering by attending the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Sagabaen, a Kaua‘i High School graduate, has been accepted at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and Tuzon, a graduate of Kapa‘a High School, plans on becoming a pediatrician, majoring in pre-medicine at Vanguard University in Southern California.
Ramos said it is through the support of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce golf tournament that scholarships like the five presented Tuesday, as well as the Kaua‘i Community College nursing scholarship program, are possible.
The Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce, with help from the golf tournament, has awarded more than $75,000 to deserving Kaua‘i students since starting its scholarship programs.
Applications for the KCC nursing scholarship will be available later this summer, and the golf tournament is scheduled for Labor Day weekend Sept. 3 at Wailua Golf Course.
Registration starts at 6 a.m. with a shotgun start at 7 a.m.
