LIHU‘E — Kauluwehiokekai Oliver, of Anahola, who earlier in May walked with the Kaua’i Community College graduates, danced her way to first place in the 22- to 25-year-old Vahine Tahitian Solo competition category at the Kaua’i Polynesian Festival in Lihu‘e on Sunday.
This is Oliver’s eighth first-place win in Tahitian Solo competitions. She was joined as a first-place winner by fellow group member Gabriella Bryan, of Kilauea, who was a standout in the 10- to 12-year-old Vahine Tahitian Solo category.
The dancers’ natural grace and arduous practice resulted in four of the six entrants of the group Urahutia earning awards.
Serena Bryan, of Kilauea, and Sydnee White, Andrea Baltazar, and Marin Johnson, all of Kapa’a, all showed their skills impressively. White and Johnson placed in the 18n- to 21-year-old Vahine Tahitian Solo category.
Led by Kaua’i’s Mi Nei Oliver Martins, a 27-time first-place Tahitian Solo winner, the dancers perform regularly at The St. Regis Hotel in Princeville, the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel in Wailua and at the Po‘ipu Shopping Village.
