KALALAU – Kaua‘i police have recovered the body of a 30-year-old Kapa‘a woman Wednesday morning who fell to her death Tuesday night at Kalalau, a county news release states.
The woman has been identified as Rose Schlegel.
Schlegel apparently died from her injuries after falling near a campsite in Kalalau Valley last night.
She had hiked into the valley with a friend and was walking near their campsite at around 10 p.m. when she reportedly fell down a cliff and landed on rocks roughly 20 feet below.
Nearby campers, including an out-of-state medic, attempted to stabilize and resuscitate the woman, but she remained unresponsive.
Another bystander used his VHF radio to call the Coast Guard for assistance. The Coast Guard then notified the Kaua‘i Fire Department at around 10:30 p.m., but due to the late hour, Air 1 was unable to fly into the area until daybreak Wednesday.
Police detectives, along with Rescue 3 personnel, recovered the body via Air 1 Wednesday morning.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
“As with all cases of this nature, whether criminal or an unfortunate incident, KPD will investigate the matter with all due diligence, while maintaining respect and sensitivity for the victim and her family,” Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry said.
