HANALEI — A group painting session at Hanalei Bay Saturday morning will launch this year’s Plein Air Invitational benefiting the Wai‘oli Mission House and the Grove Farm museums.
Janet Killerman said 16 prominent plein air artists have been invited to paint various scenes of Kaua‘i during the week starting Saturday and running through June 16.
A plein air artist is define to mean artists who paint on site, usually outdoors.
Starting with the late 1880s and continuing into the 20th century, artists in California painted in an artistic style which exalted the picturesque landscape and unique light of the Golden State, according to the Plein Air Art website.
This style was labeled “California Impressionism,” or “California Plein-Air Painting” after the French term for “in the open air,” combining several distinctive aspects of American and European art, the website states.
With 16 artists painting at the same location at Hanalei Bay, each artist brings their own interpretation of the scene and light to their respective canvas, Killerman said.
“It’s really interesting to see the difference in each work,” the coordinator of the invitational said. “During the week, the artists select their own locations and times to paint, ending with another group session in Lihu‘e on June 16.”
During the afternoon of June 16, the public is encouraged to witness the transformation of a blank canvas into a work of art.
Grove Farm museum, located on 4050 Nawiliwili Road, will host a reception and art sale from 1 to 5 p.m.
Admission is $20 and during this period, the original paintings created during the week will be displayed and available for purchase.
Organizers estimate there will be more than 70 pieces produced during the week and will be available. There will also be tours of the Grove Farm museum grounds and sugar plantation era buildings, live music both indoors and outside, and refreshments, including the offering of beer and wine.
