To recognize “Get Outdoors Day,” Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will waive entrance fees on Saturday, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service release states.
In a recent Department of Interior (DOI) news release, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar urged Americans to reconnect to the natural world this summer.
“One of the goals of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative is to connect people to the beauty and richness of this planet and encourage a conservation ethic that will ensure that we protect this precious inheritance for our children to enjoy,” Salazar said.
To help support the initiative, the department is waiving admission fees on the first day of summer at national parks, BLM lands, and all 553 national wildlife refuges.
At Kilauea Point NWR, rangers and volunteers are gearing up for a fun and exciting day. Visitors can celebrate the great outdoors by learning about Hawaiian wildlife. Keiki are invited to participate in a ranger-led activity 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. All entry fees will be waived. On-site parking is limited; all visitors are encouraged to carpool.
Kaua‘i National Wildlife Refuge Complex Manager Shannon Stutzer-Smith encourages all families to visit the refuge throughout the summer. “Get Outdoors Day is the perfect start to summer,” she said. “The free day affords local families and visitors alike an exciting opportunity to make a trip to the refuge, learn about wildlife, and connect with nature.”
The Refuge is also pleased to announce the return of ranger-led interpretive programs at Kilauea Point. These half-hour programs will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning June 12. The refuge is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
