A 23-year old ‘Ele‘ele man was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant after crashing his truck into a utility pole along Kaumuali‘i Highway late Saturday night.
Florens Castillo was traveling west on Kaumuali‘i Highway, near the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center, at about 11:15 p.m. when he struck a utility pole along the westbound shoulder of the highway, causing his white Toyota pickup truck to roll over onto its side in the vicinity of the Ele‘ele Shopping Center.
According to Kaua‘i Police Department spokeswoman Sarah Blane, the driver suffered minor injuries and was later taken into police custody for driving under the influence. No other injuries were reported.
Police shut down Kaumuali‘i Highway from around 11:22 p.m. until about 1 a.m. Sunday morning while utility crews worked to secure the damaged pole.
Crews are reportedly back on scene today to complete repairs.
