The Garden Isle Racing Association, host of monthly drag race events at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana, recently honored Kaua‘i Community College graduate Jonathan Mendoza with an academic award accompaneied by a $500 cash award.
Mendoza received the award from Bobby Barros, president of GIRA, during the Students Thanked and Recognized reception hosted by KCC and the University of Hawai‘i Foundation, where he was introduced as being a candidate for an Associate in Applied Science degree in Automotive Mechanics Technology.
“Mendoza not only excelled academically, but displayed a high level of maturity and engaged in all projects to a successful completion,” said Tante Azares, a KCC automotive instructor.
GIRA promotes safe motorsports and safe driving on public roads by hosting its monthly family-oriented drag race events.
“We believe it is important to invest in individuals involved in the automotive industry who choose to pursue higher education,” Barros said.
Mendoza intends to eventually own a mechanic business and continue his education.
