The 2012 Newport Beach Film Festival kicked off with a new independent comedy starring Jon Lovitz (“Benchwarmers”), Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Rita Wilson (“The Story of Us”) and Tom Arnold. It was a great comedy. It was about a guy who pretends to be Jewish and has his best friend teach him “the ways of being Jewish” so he may get with Jennifer Love-Hewitt. Keep this film in mind.
Next, Hawai‘i and Kaua‘i were represented through the filmmaking, music and art of Wyland (painter of the giant mural on the wall of Long’s Drugs in Kapa‘a) and former Kaua‘i resident (and Blues Legend) Taj Mahal. “Blues Planet: Sounds” brings awareness to environmental care, by using the power of the Blues to bring that message to the world. For those who don’t know, the Blues is the most powerful music we have, because all other American music comes from it.
Jane Fonda (“Coming Home”) made her independent big-screen return in a great drama with Katherine Keener (“40 Year-Old Virgin”) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Grey’s Anatomy”) titled “Peace, Love and Understanding.”
Check back next week; I’ll have covered some Canadian films I saw and another Hawai‘i connection. Kaua‘i’s own (Ha‘ena resident) Producer Teri Tico’s film “Miss South Pacific” is showing in a few days and will appear in next week’s coverage. It is awesome to be in California and see artists with Kaua‘i ties doing their thing. Don’t forget to tune in next week for more great films. This year’s festival boasts 50 films from 450 countries. It’s a beautiful thing to have film bring the world together.
