LIHU‘E — Credit unions throughout the nation celebrated National Credit Union Youth Week April 22 to 28. Garden Island Federal Credit Union decided to extend its celebration by honoring youth throughout the entire month, according to a press release.
This year’s theme was, “Be a Credit Union Super Saver,” and Garden Island FCU held activities that educated youth about the benefits of saving. Two activities included a coloring contest and a coin guessing game.
Christie Yago, 5, won $15 to Fun Factory for her completed coloring sheet, and Alexis Ramos-Soares, 4, won $38.01 for submitting the closest guess in Garden Island FCU’s “Guess the Jar” game.
Youth 17 and under who opened an account or deposited funds into their savings account were given a gift pack.
“Garden Island FCU’s most important goal was to excite and educate youth about saving money, which is why a few select staff members visited two Kauai elementary school classes,” the release states.
“Educating our youth at an early age is extremely important to us at Garden Island Federal Credit Union,” says Marketing Coordinator Kim Tamaoka.
“We wanted to visit the schools and introduce children to the concept of saving money, in a fun and exciting way.”
Worried that Kindergartners were too young to understand the concept of managing money, Tamaoka says she was pleasantly surprised by how receptive the students were to learn.
